Since its establishment, in 1983, the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) has spearheaded an integrated Islamic high educational system, in which knowledge is pursued on the basis of the worldview of Tawhid, i.e., the belief in the absolute oneness and all-encompassing sovereignty of Almighty Allah (s. w. t.), the Lord and Sustainer of the universe. In this worldview the Divine Revelation from Allah (s. w. t.) is the highest source and reference of true knowledge, and human Reason, as Allah’s creation and trust, is to be used in harmony with Divine Revelation and the Will of Allah (s. w. t.). As a result of western imperialism, secularization and westernization of human knowledge, the supremacy of Divine Revelation has been pushed aside to make way for the complete independence of Reason, operating on the basis of pure rationalism, positivism, empiricism and naturalism. Consequently all the modern natural sciences, the medical sciences and allied health sciences in the West as well as in several Muslim countries were developed primarily from the secular worldview. This state of affairs was and is most unacceptable to many Muslim scholars and thinkers. As part of the process of liberating the Muslim personality, culture, and civilization from the dominance of the secular or naturalistic paradigm of knowledge construction with all the crises that it produced in the last one hundred years, concerned Muslim scholars and thinkers have embarked on the project of Islamicization of acquired human knowledge and disciplines which have originated from the dominant agnostic intellectual centers of modern civilization.
IIUM is one of those institutions of higher learning and educational organizations in the world which is dedicated to the mission of Islamizisation of Human Knowledge (IOHK). This mission of Islamizisation of human knowledge and Relevantization of Islamic religious disciplines in IIUM is guided by the injunctions, dictates, insights and wisdom (hikmah) of Divine Revelation as contained in the Holy Qur’an and the Sunnah of the Prophet (s. a. w.). It is driven by the conviction that solutions to the human predicaments and contemporary crises of modern/post-modern civilization are to be sought through the methodology of knowledge construction which was applied during the Golden Age of Islamic civilization which flourished in Baghdad, Alexandria, Andalusia, and the Ottoman Empire; namely the integration of Divine Knowledge and Human Reason (‘aql) which is grounded and guided by faith (iman) and profound God-mindfulness (taqwa). IIUM has been pursuing this agenda for the last thirty years and have produced many holistic human as well as intellectual products which are badly needed in many Muslim countries and communities in the world. IIUM has been honored with the international recognition from ISESCO in 2014 as a Premier International Islamic Research University, and is among the leading Islamic universities in the world. More and more Muslim educational institutions and organizations in Southeast Asia, South Asia and Central Asian Republics have come to appreciate the model of IIUM system and are in the process of emulating the system in their own national contexts.
In 2013 IIUM initiated and organized the First World Congress on Integration and Islamizisation of Acquired Human Knowledge which covered all the branches of knowledge. The theme of the Congress was “The Need to Apply the Paradigm of Tawhid as an Alternative to the Secular Paradigm”. It was supported and attended by the second Rector of IIUM, Dato’ Emeritus Professor Dr. AbdulHamid AbuSulayman and many well-known international Muslim scholars in different disciplines. The university has decided to hold the Second Congress in 2016 in the Kuantan Campus in Pahang, Malaysia in October 2016, in shaa’ Allah, this time with the intention to focus on medical and health-care sciences.
The theme of this 2nd World Congress is the application and incorporation of moral values and the Maqasid al-Shari’ah (high objectives of the Divine Code of Life) into medical and health care curriculum and practices. The Congress also would like to introduce to the world and show-case the brand-new IIUM’s own teaching hospital in the beautiful Kuantan campus, adjacent to the university mosque. The organizing committee hopes to bring 300 presenters and participants to address the need to re-moralize and re-Islamicize certain aspects of contemporary medical and health-care sciences which are derived purely from the secular humanistic paradigm and have become a source of moral concern among Muslim scholars as well as some non-Muslim scholars who are familiar with the shortcomings or defects in the conventional secularized systems and practices. The proceedings of the Congress would be in Arabic, English and Malay-Indonesian languages.

Hence, students, researchers and academicians whose works are focused on the integration or Islamicisation of human knowledge in the areas of medical and health-care sciences as well as those who seek to understand the role of moral values and Maqasid al-Shari’ah in medical and healthcare practices, in a more comprehensive framework, are invited to present and participate in the 2ND WORLD CONGRESS ON THE INTEGRATION AND ISLAMICISATION: FOCUS ON MEDICAL AND HEALTH CARE SCIENCES (2WCII2016). Educators as well as those interested in the relationship between what can be achieved and what ought to be achieved in medical and health sciences are also welcomed to present and participate.
